The Bilderkeller is a coal cellar of the Akademie der Künste at Pariser Platz whose walls carry murals by Manfred Böttcher, Harald Metzkes, Ernst Schroeder and Horst Zickelbein. The academy's master students painted them in 1957 and 1958 during carnival in the political 'thaw period'; they are considered a unique document of unofficial art in the GDR. The Akademie der Künste offers guided tours for a maximum of 14 visitors, as the cellar can only be accessed as part of a tour. A media station presents interviews with contemporary witnesses such as Fritz Cremer, Paul Dessau and Helene Weigel as audio documents of a campaign against the academy.
