The drama „Das schweigende Klassenzimmer“ is set in 1956: after a cinema visit in West Berlin, the pupils Theo and Kurt see dramatic newsreel images of the Hungarian uprising in Budapest. Back in Stalinstadt, where they are preparing for their school-leaving exams with classmates Lena, Paul and Erik, they come up with the plan of a silent minute of solidarity in class for the victims of the uprising against the Russian superiority. The SED leadership condemns the quiet gesture as a „counter-revolutionary action“, and the minute of silence turns into a conflict with the state authorities. For the young people, the action becomes an experience that shapes the rest of their lives.
