This is a film screening of À propos de Nice, followed by a talk about 20th-century life in the French Riviera. The film was directed by Jean Vigo and Boris Kaufman, and is a 1930 documentary offering a provocative portrait of Nice, capturing both the luxury of the carnival on the promenade and the poverty of the working-class neighbourhoods. After the screening, historian Richard Vinen, who has taught at King's College London since 1991 and specialises in modern France and Europe, will discuss the Riviera's two competing realities: the sun-soaked playground of artists and aristocrats and the poverty of everyday life in the shadow of war and the Great Depression.
