The Studio is a solo exhibition of paintings by the American painter Jonathan Gardner at a London gallery. He takes the artist's studio as his subject: rooms within rooms and paintings within paintings, built from memory, imagination and art history. The flat, clean rooms with colour laid down in blocks nod to Matisse and Magritte, while landscapes with rivers and desert scenes open spaces of solitude. Beneath the art-historical poise, the exhibition holds something like hope shadowed by unease at a deliberate, painterly distance.
