Former East / Former West
Lichtblick, Kastanienallee 77, 10435 Berlin, Prenzlauer Berg
About
A documentary based on hundreds of street interviews conducted in Berlin two years after reunification, showing what it meant to be German at that particular point in history. The New York artist Shelly Silver questions the notion of a shared language by focusing on shifting definitions of political and economic terms such as democracy, freedom, capitalism and socialism, and of words describing nations and identities such as nationality, Germany, history, foreigner and home. She explores the tension between the public and the private, the narrative and the documentary, and the relationship between subject and object of contemplation. Her works have been exhibited worldwide, including at MoMA in New York, the Tate Modern and the Centre Pompidou.

Critics
Praised for its sensitivity to nuance and a disturbingly open portrait of a still-divided city. No concrete faults are named; only the purely interview-based form is noted.
