About
A guided tour of the Archenhold Observatory in Treptower Park, whose landmark is the Treptow giant telescope. The Stiftung Planetarium Berlin invites visitors: the tour explains how the telescope, built in 1896 for the Berlin Industrial Exhibition, and the observatory came into being. The longest movable refracting telescope on Earth – 21 metres focal length, 680 millimetres lens diameter, weighing 130 tonnes and nicknamed the 'Himmelsskanone' (sky cannon) – is presented along with the eventful history of the house. Afterwards, a movable model in the observatory's exhibition demonstrates how this giant, one of the ten most powerful refracting telescopes in the world, works.
