Moderne Zeiten

“Modern Times” is shown as a silent film with live orchestral music. The Babylon Orchester Berlin performs Charlie Chaplin's 1936 film live with Chaplin's own music. The film tells of the Tramp, who as a simple worker on a factory assembly line suffers a nervous breakdown and, from hospital to prison to unemployment, is caught up in the cogs of modern industry – until he comes across a beautiful orphaned gamine whom he helps escape from the police. Chaplin casts a critical eye on productivity and the constraints of modern life.

8.8Outstanding

Critics praise the witty satire of industrialisation and alienated labour, plus Chaplin's slapstick and human charm. Faults include a loosely connected, rambling plot that occasionally feels slight and uneven in pacing.
