About
Festen (The Celebration) is a 1998 Danish film about a patriarch's lavish birthday gathering that descends into chaos, laying bare the fractures beneath a façade of bourgeois respectability through handheld camerawork, stark natural lighting, and raw, unflinching performances. It was directed by Thomas Vinterberg, who the film announced as an exciting new voice at the dawn of the Dogme 95 movement, and it won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. The screening comes with an introduction by Leo Krenzer.

Critics
8.0Very good
Critics praise the immersive, guest-like handheld style, superb ensemble acting, and the daring blend of dark comedy and tragedy. Faults are few: some find the subject matter disturbing and the Dogme framing a distraction.
