About

A man known as 'Spider', born Dennis Cleg, returns from a psychiatric hospital to a halfway house in the East End, where he paces abandoned canals and towpaths holding his childhood memories and slowly realises what happened all those years ago. David Cronenberg adapted the film from Patrick McGrath's own 1990 novel of the same name, filmed across East, South-East and North London in pre-gentrified locations. Ralph Fiennes plays the title character in a riveting performance, alongside Miranda Richardson, Gabriel Byrne and Lynn Redgrave. Genuinely haunting, it is an unsettling portrait of a psyche in freefall, where the borders between place and personality start to break down.

Critics

7.3Very good

Critics praise Ralph Fiennes' haunting lead performance, the unsettling psychological depth, and the film's intelligent, British-toned atmosphere. They fault its slow, patience-testing pace and a mystery that is predictable, occasionally turning oppressive into boring.
