About
A talk titled 'In Praise of Shadows: An Aesthetics of Rendition — Arthur Jafa on Free Association', running 3pm−4:30pm. It brings together American artist and filmmaker Arthur Jafa, whose work has been shown at institutions such as Fondazione Prada in Venice and the New Museum in New York, and Mitsuharu Kurokawa, President of the historic Japanese confectionery Toraya, moderated by art producer Yamashita Yukako. Taking the 'aesthetics of shadow' from Jun'ichirō Tanizaki's In Praise of Shadows as a point of departure, it explores Jafa's creative trajectory and his inquiry into the multilayered history of Black culture through moving images, music and other forms of expression. The conversation also delves into the philosophy of light and shadow in Japanese culture and Jafa's editing techniques that collage images beyond their original contexts.
