About

A biopic of the Bolshevik commander Mykola Shchors, the 'Red Commander of the Ukraine,' starring Yevgeny Samoylov in the title role. Directed by Oleksandr Dovzhenko with Yulia Solntseva and personally commissioned by Joseph Stalin, its production came under make-or-break pressure that took a grievous toll on Dovzhenko's health, though it earned him the first of two Stalin Prizes. It endures less for its vigorous hagiography than for the moments of ineffable poetry embroidered through it, rooted in Ukrainian cultural tradition and a relish for the natural world.
