About

Unearthed (a work in progress) presents Jim Hodges' monumental bronze cast of an uprooted tree stump, a form that evokes majesty while mourning humankind's impact on the natural world. The suspended, truncated sculpture suggests the branches and life that once reached toward the sun, inviting reflection on fragility, ephemerality, and the sacredness of life. The work-in-becoming began with a 2019 residency in San Francisco's Grace Cathedral and continues to gather experiences through community participation before its roots are ultimately reunited with the ground through burial. Hodges, an internationally renowned artist who lives and works between New York City and Milan, has explored themes of fragility, temporality, love, and death since the late 1980s.
