Bootlegger

BOOTLEGGER is a film about Mani, a law student who returns to her family's remote reserve in northern Québec for her thesis. It was directed by Caroline Monnet and stars, among others, Kawennáhere Devery Jacobs and Pascale Bussières. Mani realises how far she has become estranged from her roots and confronts the reserve's self-imposed prohibition and the rampant alcohol abuse in the community. What begins as a search for her roots turns into an engagement with structural discrimination, Canadian reserve policy and cultural self-determination – a clever and confident appeal to self-reflection and empowerment.
