LACRIMÆ is a Baroque concert at the Alte Kirche Fluntern in Zurich. In it, Martina Joos on recorders and Martin Zimmermann on harpsichord combine tears transformed into sound, full of pain and longing, with the joyful and intoxicating side of music. The programme is devoted to the musical depiction of lament, grief and melancholy, which became a central form of expression in European music between the late 15th and 18th centuries. It shows how composers used rhetorical figures, descending chromatic lines and lament basses to give grief and pain an audible form.
