About
„Der schweigende Stern“ is the first science fiction film of the DEFA, an East German-Polish co-production from 1960. Directed by Kurt Maetzig after Stanisław Lem's novel „Die Astronauten“, it tells of an international space expedition that follows an encrypted message to Venus. There the cosmonauts around Yôko Tani, Oldrich Lukes and Ignacy Machowski find not the feared attack, but a completely desolate scenario. The pacifist film stands as a dystopian warning to the arms-racing Cold Warriors of the early 1960s.

Critics
4.7Mixed
Critics praise the film's social critique and ambitious original design. They fault the heavily censored Western cut, which removed political content and reduced the work to a mere shadow of itself.
