Herz aus Glas
Zeughauskino, Unter den Linden 2, 10117 Berlin, Mitte
About
Herz aus Glas is a feature film by Werner Herzog based on a story by Herbert Achternbusch, set in a glassworks in the Bavarian Forest of the 19th century. After the glassblower Mühlbeck takes the secret recipe for ruby glass to his grave, the village community searches desperately for the formula and slides into madness, while the seer Hias keeps announcing the coming downfall. Less concerned with a socially critical revision of the heimat film than with its nature-mystical, romantic traditions, the film is accompanied by the sounds of the band Popol Vuh.

Praised: hypnotic imagery and bold experiment, with striking scenes. Faulted: an unsatisfying narrative that never works as cinema, indulgent and self-absorbed.
