About
RBO Encore 2026-27: Manon is a cinema screening of the ballet Manon. Kenneth MacMillan created the work for The Royal Ballet in 1974, adapting Abbé Prévost's novel, with Jules Massenet's score and Nicholas Georgiadis's designs. It tells of Manon, a young woman in the seedy underworld of 18th-century Paris, who falls in love with the student Des Grieux but remains tempted by the riches of Parisian society. MacMillan's insight into human psychology turns her inner turmoil and struggle for survival into an unflinching look at the moral degradation and decadence of her Paris.

Critics
7.2Very good
Critics praise the choreography's emotional storytelling, expressive dancing, and the lush, well-performed music and staging. Faults are few: one male principal seems less at ease, and the work's portrayal of its heroine drew past criticism.
