About

Onwards and Sideways is a film about two strangers who, on the same morning, are each confronted with a diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease. Tony Evans is a deputy head of a primary school, and Emma Kent is a musician, composer and single mother of two daughters, and neither knows the other until a startling encounter changes the course of their lives. It is the story of a friendship that unfolds unexpectedly, one of humour and emotion, of challenge and bravado, of music and dance, transcending the assumptions of a little understood condition. The drama was directed by John Madden and stars Rhys Ifans, Laura Linney, Monica Dolan and Rory Kinnear.

Critics

7.0Good

Critics praise the two lead performances as superb and the film's authentic, compassionate handling of illness with humour. They fault its soft-centered, anodyne and programmatic writing that sometimes feels like high-end television.
