About

Charles Burchfield: Elemental is an exhibition of watercolors at the Whitney Museum of American Art. It presents works by Charles Burchfield (1893–1967), who over five decades painted what he called the "tremendous force of nature." Drawn from the Whitney's collection, the show includes early landscapes, meditations on the sky, and monumental "reconstructions" that reflect his reverence for the elemental forces and cycles of the natural world. Organized by curatorial assistant Caroline Webb, the exhibition is part of an ongoing initiative to present rarely seen works from the museum's collection and is on view on Floor 7 through Spring 2027.
