About
An allegorical drama from 1976 by director Carlos Saura, its title taken from the Spanish proverb "Raise ravens and they will pick your eyes out." Set in the twilight of Spain's Franco dictatorship, it stars Ana Torrent as a traumatized eight-year-old, one of three sisters living with a domineering aunt in Madrid after their parents' death. Feeling herself drifting between the worlds of the living and the dead, she becomes convinced she can end the lives of her adult persecutors. Both an uncanny family drama and a historical parable, with Geraldine Chaplin and Torrent outstanding.

Critics
7.3Very good
Critics admire the film's melancholy atmosphere, deft handling of grief, and its memorable performances and allegorical depth. Some fault it as unstructured and elusive, with ideas that remain unclear and a deliberately discreet approach.
