About
Stanley Kubrick's 1980 horror film The Shining, starring Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Scatman Crothers and Danny Loyd, shows his visionary approach to the genre with deliberate pacing, deferred catharsis and haunting abstract imagery. When first released in 1980, most critics were baffled or negative, but Kubrick was laying the groundwork for future generations of art-horror filmmakers. He responded to the critiques by editing a shorter cut with less slack for the European market, which he called "The Two-Hour Version" and which his long-time assistant Leon Vitali claimed was Kubrick's preferred cut.

Critics
8.1Very good
Critics praise the film's chilling atmosphere, suggestive music and gripping direction that made it a classic. Early reviewers faulted slow pacing, weak character connection and a supernatural plot lacking logic.
