A Friend in Berlin

“A Friend in Berlin” is an evening event with a screening and a conversation in English at Grüner Salon. The series focuses on the fellows of the DAAD's Berliner Künstlerprogramm and their connections to the city, and this edition brings together the artists Wang Tuo and Sim Chi Yin, who has lived in Berlin since 2024. The evening begins with a screening of Wang Tuo's most recent work “Ratchet Drill” (2026), followed by a conversation based on a selection of both artists' works, exploring the connections between their practices and how they engage with challenging histories and historical experiences and find ways to speak about them with people outside of those experiences. Wang Tuo weaves historical facts, cultural archives, fiction and mythology into speculative narratives, while Sim Chi Yin uses artistic and archival interventions to question and complicate historiographies and colonial narratives and to explore transgenerational memory.
