About

„Chasing Hope“ is a documentary about conflict photographer Johannes Müller, who photographs people in war and crisis zones – not in search of the spectacular image, but of moments of dignity, closeness and humanity. Director Sandra Kaudelka accompanies him on a journey to the Autonomous Region of Kurdistan in Iraq, to Peshmerga fighting the Islamic State, to families in refugee camps and to Kurdish women from Iran who fight for their rights. The film tells of everyday life under threat and the strength to keep living, and asks what responsibility a photographer bears for the people and stories he shows. In his main profession Müller works as a communications manager for an international company and repeatedly leaves his secure everyday life in Germany behind to travel with his camera to regions shaped by war, flight and political violence.
