About
"DIE HEXEN VON BERNAU" is a scenic-musical in-house production by the Theater im Palais devoted to the witch persecutions as a dark chapter of history. Fitting the yearly motto "Die Kraft der Frauen" (The Power of Women), the piece depicts the wave of persecution that began in Bernau near Berlin in 1617, in which many innocents, above all women, were accused of witchcraft. At its center is 70-year-old Dorothea Meermann, arrested for sorcery in the third generation of her family and repeatedly tortured for over two years, yet she holds to her statement that she is no witch until her death. Based on intensive historical research and true fates, Alina Gause and Carl Martin Spengler dive, now acting, now narrating, into a story in which narratives outweigh facts and the powerful are always right.
