L’Arbre de l’Authenticité
fsk - Kino am Oranienplatz, Segitzdamm 2, 10969 Berlin, Kreuzberg
About
A film about Yangambi, a biological research station from the Belgian colonial era, where scientific records about the nature of the Congo Basin are found. They show, among other things, how trees respond to climate change. The Congolese rainforests play a central role in the global climate balance. Carried by a poetic text and an immersive soundscape, at the end of the film Lileko, the tree of authenticity, whispers: “My children will be workers in a new climate economy.”

Critics
The critic praises the evocative imagery and sound design and the uncompromising gaze that grants the forest agency and questions colonial legacies. Little is faulted, though the essayistic approach is demanding.
