Mononoke
Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, Linienstraße 227, 10178 Berlin, Mitte
About
"Mononoke" is a theatre piece at the Volksbühne, named after Japanese spirits that nest in people and smuggle in curses. It tells of Takako, a hardware dealer who carries such a curse – her father's curse, who disappeared when she had her first period – and tries to free herself from it. Behind the piece is Japanese author and director Satoko Ichihara, an important voice of a new feminist generation of theatre makers, with stage designs by the artist Mire Lee. The result is a surreal heroine's journey through a world populated by gods, puppets, ironware and sales talks.
