Gentle Monster

Gentle Monster is a drama by director and screenwriter Marie Kreutzer, starring Léa Seydoux, Jella Haase, Catherine Deneuve and Laurence Rupp. The singer Lucy has just moved to the countryside with her husband Philip and their son when the police arrive to search the house – on suspicion of child pornography. The accusation against Philip turns Lucy's world upside down, and she has to ask who the man she loves really is. The film tells a story of trust and deception, of love and honesty with oneself, and invites reflection on patriarchal power structures.

Critics praise the lead actress's intense performance and the empathetic, understated direction. They fault overstuffed subplots that muddy the narrative and weaken its dramatic focus.
