ugly duckling
Kammerspiele, Schumannstraße 14a, 10117 Berlin, Mitte
About
"ugly duckling" is a theatre production at the Kammerspiele in Berlin that links Andersen's fairy tale of the ugly duckling with the city's drag scene. It was directed by Bastian Kraft, who developed the piece with an ensemble after Hans Christian Andersen and received the Ehrenstöckel award for it in 2019. On stage are Berlin drag queens such as Jade Pearl Baker, Gérôme Castell and Judy LaDivina, whose make-up and wigs turn transformation into a liberating play with gender roles. The tale of the ugly duckling becoming a proud swan thus becomes a spectacle about self-confidence.
