About
„Call Me Queen“ is a drama by filmmaker and writer Emily Atef, starring Eliane Umuhire, Denise Gough, Danny Sapani and Dominic West. It tells how, in Nairobi around 1999, women above all joined together in a pan-African movement to stop the spread of HIV. At its centre is the single mother Quinta, known as Queen, who falls ill with AIDS and resists Western patent policies, greed and the stigma of the disease. Based on Lara Santoro's novel „Mercy“, the fictional biopic reflects white privileges and centres Black perspectives.

Critics
Critics praise the powerful lead performance and the gripping depiction of activism emerging from anger at patent injustice during the AIDS crisis. No faults are mentioned; the portrayal of pharmaceutical greed is highlighted as striking.
