About

Laoniang is a photographic exhibition presented by The Koppel Project at Collective. It is the work of Zhiyan Liu, a London-based photographer, and centres on her maternal grandmother, whom she has called Laoniang since childhood. Through sustained engagement with the eighty-year-old's daily life — working the land, tending the courtyard, caring for animals and resting at home — the project explores kinship, ageing, domesticity and self-determination. It considers the tensions between familial care and personal autonomy, inviting a reconsideration of how lives are looked at and understood.
