About

Laoniang is a photographic exhibition by Zhiyan Liu, presented by The Koppel Project. It is an enquiry into kinship, ageing, domesticity and self-determination, centred on the photographer's maternal grandmother, now eighty years old, whose everyday life of working the land and caring for her home Liu has followed with her camera. Rooted in their close family relationship, the series considers how familiar routines carry knowledge and autonomy, and questions assumptions about later life, labour and care. The images invite viewers to look at a life that cannot be reduced to the perspectives or expectations of others.
