Suzhou River
The Metrograph, Ludlow Street 7, 10002 New York, Manhattan
About
Suzhou River is a feature film screening. Director Ye Lou, from his hometown Shanghai, named it after the polluted river flowing through the city. Using the first-person perspective of an unseen videographer-narrator, it follows an unsuspecting motorcycle courier who becomes snared in a kidnapping plot and murder rap. The brooding film draws on influences from film noir to Vertigo while developing its own haunting visual vocabulary.

Critics
7.3Very good
Critics praise the inventive first-person narration, moody Shanghai atmosphere and stylish editing, seeing a fresh voice. They fault a sentimental, unconvincing plot, an overfamiliar Vertigo debt and emotional distance from the characters.
