About
Columbus is Kogonada's lauded first feature, in which modern architecture acts as a vehicle for emotional expression. Its title refers to the Indiana city that has commissioned buildings from masters including I.M. Pei, Eero Saarinen, and Robert Venturi, thanks to the patronage of Cummins cofounder J. Irwin Miller. A Korean American translator (John Cho) arrives there after his estranged scholar father falls ill, crossing paths with his father's protégée (Parker Posey), an aesthete library clerk (Haley Lu Richardson), and a bevy of singular structures. A film of rich colors and muted yearning, it is one of the most distinctive debuts of the last decade of American independent cinema.

Critics
8.2Very good
Critics praise the meticulous, painterly composition, the delicate lead performances and chemistry, and the graceful blend of architecture with quiet emotion. The main fault cited is the slow, deliberate pacing that may try impatient viewers.
