Yi Yi

About
Edward Yang's 2000 film Yi Yi observes the interplay between three generations of an upper middle-class Taipei family. The last work of a master filmmaker who died far too young, it is gentle, restrained, and terribly humane. Comic in its dealings with the foibles of its excellent ensemble cast and the mores of the urban bourgeoisie, it is also possessed by an air of unmistakable melancholy and lingering regret at missed opportunities. An epic-length work without a hint of bombast, it works its way into the hidden spaces of everyday people's emotional lives, as rich and as sad as life itself.

Critics praise the film's humane, patient direction and its rich portrayal of family life across generations. Some fault its slow pace, length, overly sweet score, and one jarring dramatic episode.
