"When the Berlin Wall was cutting the city" is a commemoration of the victims of Berlin's division and an invitation to learn about this chapter of German and Berlin history at numerous places in the city. In August 1961, in the night of 12 to 13, the Nationale Volksarmee sealed off the roads and rail routes to West Berlin, after which the GDR government had a wall built along the sector border. According to current research, several hundred people were killed trying to overcome the 167.8-kilometre-long border installations. The Wall fell on 9 November 1989.
