About
The film tells of the bandit da Silva, known as Cobra Verde, who works as the manager of a sugar cane plantation in Brazil and becomes the overseer of 600 slaves. After he impregnates the plantation owner's underage daughters, he is sent as punishment to West Africa as a slave trader. There he wins the favor of a local tribal prince through his negotiating skills and, as leader of an army of Amazons, becomes part of revolutionary upheavals. Werner Herzog directed, with Klaus Kinski, King Ampaw, José Lewgoy and Salvatore Basile on screen.

Critics
6.1Good
Critics praise the striking visuals, exotic locations and hypnotic imagery. They fault the sluggish, fragmentary structure and Kinski's one-note performance, calling it the weakest of the Herzog-Kinski collaborations.
