Die Geierwally

About
Die Geierwally is a 1956 feature film based on Wilhelmine von Hillern's 1873 novel Die Geier-Wally. It was directed by František Čáp and stars Barbara Rütting and Carl Möhner. The film tells of the headstrong Wally, who defends herself against outside control and village mockery in self-chosen seclusion, accompanied only by a vulture she has rescued, which earns her the taunting name Geierwally. Instead of an idealised world, this fairy-tale-elevated love and family melodrama, in glowing colour, confronts its audience with depths and ambivalences.

Critics
Critics praise the taut direction, the lead actress and a more austere, careful craft than typical 1950s Heimatfilms. They fault its inferiority to earlier versions; one reviewer dismissed it outright as kitsch.
