About

#diewelle is a theatre production by GRIPS Theater at Hansaplatz, based on motifs from the novel “Die Welle” by Morton Rhue (Todd Strasser) in a version and translation by Jochen Strauch. A history teacher starts an experiment to show her students why the German majority watched the Nazis' crimes in silence and inaction. Exercises in discipline and hierarchical behaviour first create a sense of community, but the seductive power of fascist ideas gains the upper hand ever more radically until the experiment spins out of control. Against the backdrop of populism and autocracies in Europe, the play raises questions about peer pressure, exclusion and the endangerment of democracy.
