About

The exhibition „zurückgeschaut | looking back - Die Erste Deutsche Kolonialausstellung von 1896 in Berlin-Treptow“ is the first permanent exhibition on colonialism, racism and Black resistance in a Berlin museum. It was created by the Museen Treptow-Köpenick in cooperation with the project Dekoloniale Erinnerungskultur in der Stadt. The exhibition explores the history and aftermath of the First German Colonial Exhibition and the 106 children, women and men from Africa and Oceania who were put on display in a discriminatory "Völkerschau" in Berlin in 1896. Their biographies and their resistance are at the centre.
