About
"Elfenbein in Tempelhof" is an exhibition at the Tempelhof Museum about traces of colonial exploitation on the grounds of today's Franckepark. In the 19th century, merchant Theodor Francke ran an ivory bleaching facility there where ivory imported through colonial trade networks was processed, for example into piano keyboards. The Francke GmbH was also involved in trading looted art such as the Benin bronzes. The exhibition makes these previously overlooked traces of colonial exploitation in Tempelhof visible and invites a critical examination of Berlin's colonial history.
