Heimweh nach Dir

"Heimweh nach Dir" is a black-and-white music film from West Germany that was announced in the early 1950s as "the great Berlin film". It tells the story of five friends who form a jazz band in Berlin in the late 1930s and compete for the favour of a singer, are then scattered by the war and finally find each other again in Berlin. The film was produced as advertising for Berlin by the Berlin company Melodie-Film as its first production; R. A. Stemmle directed, and with Schlager singers and the RIAS dance orchestra under Werner Müller it was marketed as "the great German music film", drawing record audiences in West German cinemas. As a document of its time it shows how Berlin of the early 1950s was depicted with few damaged, rebuilt and new locations, while the war and postwar period are barely addressed in the film.
