About
Roberto Rossellini's “Roma città aperta” is a groundbreaking film about resistance against fascism and the struggle for change in 1940s Italy. In Nazi-occupied Rome, various lives intersect: Pina loves Francesco, an underground printer; Giorgio Manfredi leads the Roman resistance; and parish priest Pietro supports the Resistenza by passing on money and messages. When the Gestapo arrests and tortures Giorgio with the help of the Italian police, it also tries to persuade Pietro to betray the cause out of religious conviction. The screening is a talk with guest Cecilia Cenciarelli of the Cineteca di Bologna.

Critics
8.2Very good
Critics praise the unsparing realism, the authentic locations and the quasi-documentary style that made the film a neorealist classic. They fault a story that is not brilliant and a plot told soberly rather than grippingly.
