About

Elektra is an opera by Richard Strauss, performed in the Großer Saal of the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Juraj Valčuha conducts and Kirsten Harms directs, with the company's ensemble, chorus and orchestra performing. The work, to a text by Hugo von Hofmannsthal, tells of Elektra, an utterly lonely young woman kept alive only by the thought of avenging the murder of her father Agamemnon, committed by her mother. When the revenge is done and her brother Orest has killed the mother and her lover, Elektra dances an ecstatic dance and collapses dead at its height – an opera whose radicality and expressive wildness have lost none of their impact to this day.
