About
Pique Dame is an opera in three acts by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, performed at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in its main auditorium. Based on Pushkin's novella, Tchaikovsky paints a world in which economic differences dominate and the law of the strongest prevails. At its centre is Hermann, addicted to gambling, who loves Lisa, a woman longing for self-determination who comes from a wealthy family and lives under the care of her controlling grandmother, the Countess. Facing his end at the gaming table, Hermann concludes fatalistically: 'What is our life? A game! Good and evil are but dreams, work and honesty mere lies.'
