About

„The Square“ is an animated film about the impossible love between the Swedish diplomat Bori, stationed in Pyongyang, and the traffic policewoman Bok-ju. In the sealed-off reality of North Korea, their relationship must remain hidden and is constantly in danger of being exposed. Additional tension arises from the interpreter Ri Myeong-jun, who monitors Bori and becomes increasingly caught in a conflict of loyalty. The film uses gray, wintry Pyongyang and an analog 2D animation style to sensitively capture loneliness, longing, and contradictory feelings.
