Vaterland
About
The cinema screens the feature film „Vaterland“, a German-language production from Germany, Poland, Italy and France. After the Second World War, Nobel laureate in literature Thomas Mann and his daughter Erika, an actress, author and cabaret artist, travel through a Germany in ruins, from Frankfurt to Soviet-controlled Weimar. Pawel Pawlikowski directs, with Hanns Zischler, Sandra Hüller, August Diehl and Devid Striesow in the cast. For the first time since the war, Mann returns to the homeland he once fled into exile – a journey into the wounded German soul that becomes a journey inward for father and daughter.

Critics
7.3Very good
Critics praise the lead performances, elegant black-and-white cinematography and the evocative postwar atmosphere. They fault the sparse, elliptical storytelling and historical gaps that leave the film hard to follow without background knowledge.
